He Is Just the Devil in Disguise

Friday was intense! That morning was the most wound up I’ve felt on the way to court, perhaps because it had been more than three months since our last court proceeding. Pulling off the freeway near the courthouse I saw a “Tell Your Dog I Said Hi!” bumper sticker and I knew Jeannessa was with us. Arriving to find a hallway full of family and friends, as always, was incredibly helpful. I could tell we had tons of support online, too, although it’s hard to read the names from across the room. Whether in person, online, or in spirit, thank you for being there!

Many, especially those attending online, have asked what exactly was the outcome. For what it’s worth, it’s not totally clear for those of us sitting in the courtroom, either. Several different cases being addressed, a handful of inmates being escorted in and out of the courtroom, lots of attorneys shuffling papers and having quiet side conversations…The most predominant occurrence is an overwhelming amount of scheduling. It’s hard to understand why that can’t be done more efficiently outside of the courtroom, but it’s obvious that our justice system is anything but efficient.

When it finally was our turn, the exchange between the prosecutor and the judge was brief and in legalese. Fortunately, Deputy DA Kenney, as always took the time to answer all of our questions in the hallway. The bottom line is that still no plea has been made and we will be back in court, yet again, hoping for his plea, on Friday, November 20 at 9:00am. More than a year just to get a plea on what should be an open and shut case! WTAF!?

The first time we went to court, I had a very strange need to see the defendant in the flesh. It’s very hard to explain- maybe I felt seeing him would help me to get a sense of what happened. I’m not sure what I had hoped for or expected, but at this point I’ve gotten all I need from his cold, ugly face. It’s painfully obvious that he is pure evil and doesn’t possess even a speck of remorse. On Friday, when that piece of shit was escorted into the courtroom, he actually winked at me! And then two minutes later on the way out, he made eye contact with Kev and winked at him! If it wasn’t so entirely disgusting, it would be comical! It’s just that outrageous! Seriously, FUCK that guy!!!

On a much, much brighter note, that afternoon I picked up our quarter page flyers for the candlelight vigil and after-party. The large posters will be done this week and then Jeannessa’s Friends will need all the help we can get hanging them around town. If you can help, the sign-up sheet divided by neighborhood is here.

This weekend kicked off the “Days Between,*” with Jerry Day on Saturday, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead on Saturday night, and Grateful Sunday at the Crepe Place giving us an awesome opportunity to start handing event flyers out. (*For those of you non-Deadheads, August 1 is Jerry Garcia’s birthday and August 9 is the anniversary of his death, and Days Between is the veritable Deadhead holiday.) I danced my ass off and cried pretty hard, particularly during Matt Hartle’s high energy set on Sunday evening. It’s always so healing and I always feel safe letting it out surrounded by the loving energy of the Deadhead Community. I’m feeling a lot better today and have so much to look forward to, starting with National Night Out tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4, at Willow Street Park (come by our table and say “hi!”) and more live music later this week.

Absolutely Forever Grateful!
